Color is Important Consideration in Roof Selection

What is the easiest part of getting a new roof?

Some would say choosing the color of your shingles. The attitude is “pick a color, any color.” Well, it’s not that easy.

The National Roofing Contractors Association reports the color shingle you choose can affect multiple different areas from your heating and cooling bill to the resale value of your home. Here are some things to think about before you chose a color that will cover the top of your home for the next 10 to 20 years.

Heating and Cooling Costs

This is an important topic for all East Tennessee homeowners. You want to see a difference in your heating and cooling bill to offset the cost of installing the roof. We don’t blame you! But did you know the color shingle you pick could actually affect your energy costs?

You should always consider your climate when choosing the color shingle you are putting on your home.

  • Your roof color can affect the temperature in your attic by 20 to 40 degrees and make a real difference in heating or cooling your home.
  • White or light shingles reflect sunlight and help keep the temperature of your home down.
  • Dark shingles absorb heat and will help homes in colder climates stay warm. They also help melt snow and ice from your roof.

Color Coordination

In addition to protecting the interior of your home, a roof is part of your home’s cosmetic look and curb appeal.  Pick shingles that are color-coordinated with the exterior of your home.

Homes that have clashing colors can be an eyesore to the neighbors and can actually decrease the value of your home! So if you are thinking about installing a new roof to lure potential buyers, you really need to make sure the colors are well coordinated.
